Welcome to the SunSmart Learning Programme

The SunSmart Learning Programme focuses on students learning and using behaviours that will keep them from exposing their skin to harmful Ultraviolet Radiation and getting sunburned.

These resources - written by educational experts - are designed for Levels 1-4 of the New Zealand Curriculum.

Level 4

Teachers can use a full unit to cover a term or use a single lesson. Units aim to: 

  • develop numeracy and literacy
  • explain key science concepts and experiences about the sun, energy and protection.
  • support the principles of SunSmart and the New Zealand Curriculum
  • use different examples/contexts that are appropriate for different ethnic groups
  • use te reo Māori concepts and language
  • take an inquiry-based learning approach
  • help schools gain SunSmart School status

The SunSmart Schools Resources are now also linked to the Primary CREST award scheme run by the Royal Society of New Zealand. Primary CREST activities have been designed to motivate primary students and develop their interest in Science and Technology.  Click here to go to CREST

 Online Activities 

The Undercover Cody website has online interactive activities for students from 5-8 years old. It also has lots of useful resources that support sunsmart learning for sale. These include: books, posters, stickers, CDs and games.

The Generation SunSmart website, was created by the Cancer Council Australia.  New Zealand  teachers and students can login and complete their learning modules.  These modules will help students learn about sun protection skin cancer and how to use sunsmart behaviours during their day, then play an interactive game.

Create a poster - students create their own SunSmart poster to remind people how and when to keep safe in the sun and get some UV for vitamin D. This has been created by Cancer Council Victoria, Australia
