Telecom have recently lent their support to the SunSmart Schools programme by sponsoring free hats to some of the less well resourced schools around the country.  So far a total of 4000 hats have been provided to low decile schools that have applied to become SunSmart accredited.  These include schools from Northland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.

Spreydon school, in Christchurch, were the first school to be presented with their hats by Cancer Society Health Promoter, Cheryl Ford on Tuesday. The students had carried out an inquiry into being SunSmart which led them to initiating some changes in their school including applying to become a SunSmart school. This involved making a change from wearing caps to hats with a wide brim which provide protection to the face, neck and ears.
